Greece Has the Highest Share of Photovoltaic Power Generation in Europe

2024-04-19

Greece has the highest share of photovoltaic (PV) power generation in Europe, thanks to its unique light resources. In recent years, the Greek government has actively promoted photovoltaic technology as a key force in accelerating the development of new energy power systems. According to the Greek Photovoltaic Enterprises Association (Helapco) released in February this year, the analysis of data shows that in 2023, Greece's new photovoltaic installed capacity of up to 1.59 gigawatts, a record high, accounting for 74 per cent of the year's new energy. At present, Greece's national installed capacity of photovoltaic reached 7.1 GW, to meet the country's 18.4 per cent of electricity demand.

It is worth mentioning that Greek photovoltaic power generation is outstanding in Europe and even globally. Last year, Greece's PV power generation accounted for as much as 18.4 per cent of domestic power generation, ranking first in Europe and far exceeding the EU average (8.6 per cent) and the global average (5.4 per cent). By the end of 2023, 72,500 photovoltaic (PV) power generation units of all sizes and technologies had been installed throughout Greece, and this number is still growing rapidly. In addition, PV technology has become one of the most affordable technologies for power generation, with the cost of PV modules having fallen by 90 per cent since 2009.

With the strong support of the government, the rapid development of PV technology in Greece has achieved remarkable results. Last year alone, Greece's investment in new photovoltaic projects reached 1.11 billion euros, up 11 per cent year-on-year, adding 15,000 jobs to the country. At the same time, Greece also launched the construction of the largest solar power plant in the Eastern Mediterranean region, with a total investment of 130 million euros, the power plant can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 300,000 tonnes per year. Prime Minister Mitsotakis said at the launch of the new facility that Greece is committed to becoming a leader in the field of renewable energy.

In addition, Greece is actively promoting solar energy for ordinary people. Starting in May 2023, the Ministry of Energy has launched a subsidised "Rooftop PV" programme, which is available online to eligible city dwellers and farmers, with a total subsidy amount of 238 million euros. The programme aims to reduce the cost of batteries and photovoltaic systems for electricity users, and to give residents the autonomy to use electricity for green energy production and storage. Applicants joining the programme can install photovoltaic installations on areas such as roofs, canopies, terraces, façades, awnings and pergolas of buildings, as well as on agricultural land and on the ground.
