Thailand: Encouraging Installation of Rooftop Solar to Save Energy

2024-08-16

On 5 August, Thailand's Alternative Energy Development Office said that the government will direct 800 state-owned institutions across the country to save at least 20% of their energy, and that the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) and the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) will provide energy service programmes through ESCOs under them.

ESCOs will invest in the installation of energy saving equipment, including rooftop solar panels. The government will also incentivise residents to install rooftop solar panels through tax reductions and other incentives, with about 90,000 households expected to join the project in 2024-2025, which has a total budget of Bt20.2 billion and will save 590 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
